In recognition of the 215 children who were found at the former Indigenous residential school in British Columbia, flags at all WECDSB schools and buildings will be lowered to half mast for nine days, which represent approximately one hour for each of the 215 children.

Please keep the survivors and their families in your prayers. Take some time today to reflect upon the legacy of Indigenous residential schools, the impact they have had on the families and the loss of so many young lives. We recognize this tragic loss and the mourning of many today.

“We call upon our students, staff and all members of our school communities to pause and reflect on this tragedy at 2:15 p.m. today to respectfully acknowledge and remember the 215 lives that were taken,” said Director of Education Terry Lyons.

As stated in the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Canadians must do more than just talk about reconciliation.

“Canadians must learn how to practise reconciliation in our everyday lives,” the report stated. “To do so constructively, we must remain committed to the ongoing work of establishing and maintaining respectful relationships.”
