computersThousands of students throughout the WECDSB are receiving new laptop computers thanks to a new program launched by the board's IT department.

"With this new programs students will have a Chromebook as a tool to utilize throughout the day in all of their subjects," said IT Services Senior Manager Tom Renaud, whose team is overseeing the distribution of 3,000 Google devices to students in Grade 8 and 9.

Students in Grade 9 will be able to take the device home with them and it will be theirs to keep during their time with the WECDSB. Devices for those students in Grade 8 will be kept at their school.

Over the next three years, every new Grade 9 student will also receive a device, and during that time, the program will be expanded in the elementary panel so that every student from Grade 5-8 will have a device to use while they're at school.

"School administrators and teachers are super excited about it and parents are totally on board," Renaud said. "I think it's going to be a big success."

Kimberly Givlin, a Grade 7-8 teacher at Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary School said putting technology in the hands of every student will enhance her teaching practices.

"Having this opportunity for our students here is a great asset," she said.
