Q&A with Mr. Spina

What subject do you teach?
Tech. Design and Drafting.

How long have you been teaching?
15 years.

What other schools have you been at?
Villanova, CCH.

What are some things you like about teaching at St. Josephs?
The students and staff are absolutely the best aspect of teaching at STJ! I'm also fortunate to work within one of the best Tech Studies departments in the city.

What inspired you to go into teaching?
The study of Architecture was initially my first career choice leaving secondary school, closely followed by teaching. After 10 years working in the design industry it dawned on me that I could now incorporate the two! The idea of sharing the skills/knowledge I acquired through years of schooling and work with others was a big draw. Having the opportunity to inspire others or make a positive impact in their lives definitely continues to inspire me.

Why did you choose to teach your specific subject?
I've always loved drawing, problem-solving, creating and learning new technology/skills. The idea of constantly working on brand new projects was also a big part of it. Originally I went down a path to study architecture, but eventually that lead me to teaching Design & Drafting. Sharing a subject area, with others, that you are passionate about and have real-world experience in is incredibly rewarding.

Fun facts about you!
Although I'm often found designing/teaching from a computer, my true passion is everything outdoors (backcountry camping, hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking/canoeing, ATVing, etc...). A couple of my sea kayaking stories were even published in an international paddling magazine. I'm a proud parent of 2 wonderful children, and married my high school "crush". I designed and built my own house and live in the same area I grew up as a kid. Currently, I'm fixing up a small cabin in Northern Ontario where I hope to retire to someday.
