Q&A With Mr. Coop
Subject:
Construction Technology / Construction Academy
How long have you been teaching?:
I'm in my 4th year.
What other schools have you been at?:
0. Graduated from St. Joes and starting teaching at St. Joes 10 years later.
What are some things you like about teaching at St. Josephs?:
There's a club/program/place for every student to have a sense of belonging.
What inspired you to go into teaching?:
Shortage of good and skilled tradespeople and negative stigma surrounding skilled trades.
Why did you choose to teach your specific subject?:
I am very passionate about skilled trades - specifically plumbing, carpentry, and electrical.
Fun facts about you?:
I started dating my wife at St. Joes in grade 11 (the teacher of the class we had together is still there!). We were married about 7 years after that and now we have 3 kids at home. I did not take a traditional academic route to become a teacher. I completed an apprenticeship and became a licensed Plumber. I worked in the construction and industrial industries for about 12 years before I decided to become a teacher. I love coaching sports and would be happy to discuss the opportunities available in skilled trades and the Construction Academy program with just about anyone who will listen.
