Climate Crusaders

In 2017, the Windsor-Essex area experienced two flooding episodes in less than a year that were referred to as 'storms of the century.'

The damage affected more 6,000 homes, caused in excess of $150 million in damages, became the source of frustration for tens of thousands of residents, and was termed as the 'wettest moment in Canadian history' by David Phillips, Environment Canada Senior Meteorologist.

Many questions were raised during and after these events. How can such severe weather and climatic events occur in such a short period of time? What effect does climate change have on our local weather and climate patterns? What are the anthropogenic (human) forces that contribute to climate change and what should the ensuing response from our community be? Could the flooding been prevented? What can we do to be prepared for next time?

At the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board, we believe that action and Environmental Education act as catalysts towards fostering a shared responsibility as stewards of the Earth.

In partnership with the University of Windsor's Faculty of Science, our STEM Academy will build awareness of climate change by actively engaging in 'Citizen Science'. Our project, Climate Crusaders will distribute more than 1,500 rain gauges to our Grade 8 students who will actively observe, collect, record, and report their findings from their neighbourhood. Secondary students from our STEM Academy will collect and examine rainfall data across the Windsor-Essex area through tracking, analysis, interpretation, mapping, presentation, and communication. As Climate Crusaders, our students will benefit from:

  • Enhanced levels of student engagement and environmental literacy;
  • Hands-on 'real time' experiential learning by engaging in action-based research;
  • Connecting with and advocating on behalf of their communities;
  • Becoming critical and systems thinkers in applying the acquired STEM knowledge and skills;
  • Communicating their finding in a variety of ways within their class, school, and community.
Please join us in our quest to learn more about the dynamic forces that shape our environment. Contact the STEM Academy of your choice for registration information
